When Tara called me to ask if I wanted to help finish this documentary I realized that I’d seen some of it! Years earlier! And always wondered what happened! So here was a golden opportunity to find out.
Jackie, who had been filming for going on ten years by now, had a solid assembly cut already. This is what I’d seen clips from at a past POWFest. The daunting ask was to move this cut from her aging Avid system over to my FCP Mac without, well, going insane. The fact that this worked, and as if by magic was free, is one of my happier moments as an editor.
For this film all the animations and graphics were already done, so my job was to polish up the content and structure. The stories of the three women portrayed were really compelling, the challenges lie in the kind of issues that arise with verite-style shooting: the lighting being too low, the audio muddled, in short, reality. Luckily Chris and Russ at REX worked their magic in the grading and sound mix, and what came out was a really charismatic piece of indie cinema that is now getting up-res’d to full HD glory.
