When Larry first told me the story of how he, as a young man stationed in Vietnam, had met a girl, lost touch, and now wanted to find her again, I thought it was sweet. When he told me that he may have fathered a child with her, and that 40,000 Amerasian children were airlifted out of Vietnam at the end of the war and still haven’t found their fathers, a whole world opened up.
Crowd-funding such a charged subject was challenging, and this project still needs donations. There is a wealth of materials, some of which we showcased in short clips about Vietnamese music, culture, and the meaning of the term “Ghost Money”. There are also deeply personal moments of Larry’s children explaining how they feel about their possible sibling. And last but not least, this story is still unfolding. Documenting a journey this personal without knowing where it will take you takes a lot of guts, and I’m proud to have been along for a part of the ride.
