When Fred called me and told me that he’d been working on this project since the mid 90’s, I got a little worried. I imagined a disintegrating cardboard box labelled “IMPORTANT!” filled with a variety of obsolete tape formats and dust.
“I just need you to lay in the music tracks” he said. Suuure, I thought.
What I actually got from Fred was a beautifully shot, written, edited and color-corrected story about the rather remarkable woman Grace Hudowalski, one of the founders of the Adirondack 46ers. Everything was already perfect, down to the voice-over, done by Johnny Cash. John Leventhal had not only composed an original score, but also made available a large portion of his back catalog for the project. My task was so simple that my only concern was if the bird song in the background was right for the location and season.
When finding the correct bird singing is your biggest problem you know you’re in pretty good shape. And when Gonzo is your sound engineer, you can rest easy that it will be.
Because of how well everything was going, we found ourselves with enough time on our hands to go back and revisit the raw footage again. Under the auspices of ‘finding bonus material for the DVD’ we eventually added a few more stories to the film.
The premier screening of the film will take place in Lake Placid before an audience of new 46ers.
